When a champion's health reaches zero, they die. During death, the screen turns gray, displaying a death recap and timer. Gold is awarded to champions who earned kills or assists. The death of all five team members is called an ace.

Death Timer

On Summoner's Rift, death timers increase based on:

  • Champion level (Base Respawn Wait time)
  • Game time (Time Increase Factor)

Base Respawn Wait times (in seconds): 10/10/12/12/14/16/20/25/28/32.5/35/37.5/40/42.5/45/47.5/50/52.5

The Time Increase Factor grows after 15 minutes:

  • 15-30 minutes: 0.425% increase
  • 30-45 minutes: 0.3% increase
  • 45-55 minutes: 1.45% increase

On Howling Abyss, death timers are simpler: Death Timer = Level × 2 + 4 (6-40 seconds total)

Effects of Death

Upon death:

  • Cast times and channels are interrupted
  • Movement effects end
  • Most buffs are removed
  • Some buffs transfer to the killer (Crest of Cinders, Crest of Insight)
  • Item stacks may be lost (Dark Seal, Mejai's Soulstealer)

Death Prevention

Champions can avoid death through:

  1. Resurrection effects (in order of priority):
  • Zilean's Chronoshift
  • Guardian Angel
  • Anivia's Rebirth/Zac's Cell Division
  1. Minimum health thresholds:
  • Kindred's Lamb's Respite
  • Pantheon's Grand Starfall
  • Tryndamere's Undying Rage
  1. Zombie states:
  • Karthus's Death Defied
  • Kog'Maw's Icathian Surprise
  • Sion's Glory in Death

Champions in zombie states cannot:

  • Use recall or certain consumables
  • Activate resurrection effects
  • Take special terrain interactions
  • Be targeted by certain abilities

Revival

Only Akshan's Going Rogue can revive dead allied champions.

While dead, players can:

  • Shop for items
  • View the map
  • Use chat
  • Use certain items (Elixirs and Redemption)

Champions respawn at their fountain when the death timer expires.
